Electric vehicles, as the name suggests, are powered mainly by traction batteries. Batteries may catch fire and explode upon impact. Continuous operation at high temperatures can also lead to uncontrollable hazards. Therefore, the thermal management system within the three-electric system is critical, and the electric water pump, as the core of the thermal management system, is equally indispensable.
Simply put, the electric water pump for EVs acts as the "smart heart" of the battery. It cools the three-electric components — the battery, motor and electronic control unit — and is a key component safeguarding EV safety, performance and driving range.

Why is it so important?
1. **Prevent thermal runaway of the battery**: Batteries generate substantial heat during charging and discharging. High temperatures accelerate battery ageing, shorten service life and may trigger thermal runaway, posing fire risks.
2. **Maintain optimal performance**: Batteries and motors deliver their best performance within a proper temperature range. Excessively high temperatures will activate power derating, resulting in sluggish acceleration.
3. **Guard fast charging**: Fast charging generates intense heat. The electric water pump quickly removes heat to keep the charging process safe and efficient.
How does it work?
The electric water pump is the core of the liquid cooling circuit. Unlike mechanical water pumps in fuel vehicles driven by the engine, it is intelligently controlled by the vehicle ECU.
1. **Heat absorption circulation**: It drives coolant to circulate through pipelines of the battery pack and motor to carry away heat.
2. **Intelligent speed regulation**: It adjusts rotating speed in real time according to battery temperature. It runs at low speed when the vehicle is cold; during high-speed driving or fast charging, it speeds up to increase coolant flow for sufficient cooling.
3. **Air-conditioning linkage**: Under extreme thermal conditions, it works with the air-conditioning system to further cool the coolant via refrigerant, providing double protection.
Tips for EV owners
Although the electric water pump is highly intelligent, other parts of the cooling system still require regular maintenance. The radiator is prone to clogging by dust and catkins, which reduces heat dissipation. It is recommended to clean the radiator at least once a year. Otherwise, components such as the air-conditioning pump may get damaged under high temperature and pressure.
Always watch the dashboard. If a high-temperature warning pops up, it indicates possible cooling system faults such as coolant leakage or pump failure. Pull over safely for inspection immediately to avoid greater losses.
